You know the term if you have a food service background.  When you’re in the weeds on the dinner rush you just have to keep plowing ahead and get through the rush.  You’re busy, orders are going out late, and you do what you can to keep the customers happy.  Maybe another person would help, maybe another person would just be in the way.  Maybe you take a few shortcuts in the name of expediency.  Maybe you invoke the 5 second rule because it would take too long to re-cook that steak.

Well, I’m in the weeds.  Happens in software just as well except that my in the weeds dinner rush is like 2 months long instead of 3 hours.  Throwing more coders at it won’t get it done faster.  All of the fat has been trimmed from the project schedule.  The only way to get through the weeds is to code like crazy for the next several weeks and hope for the best.
