Memo to the Mets: You can have him. Enjoy accomodating the diva.
I’ll never forget what Pedro did during his time in the Fens, but I’m not in the least bit sad, surprised, shocked, or chagrined to see him go. Later!
Petey has shown time and again that his ego is more fragile than his arm. He wanted respect he said, but he takes this deal, which is about the money. As Soxfan points out below, this has nothing to do with respect.
What this is, is that this move is good for his career and he knows it. Going back to the NL will add those 4 years right back to his career. He’ll throw fewer pitches than he will playing in the AL, especially for Boston, and he’ll be good for 8, even on occasion a CG, rather than 6 2/3 and on the bench…or worse…left out for the 7th.
I’ll give him his due, Petey made me forget all about that bastard Roger. What he did against the Indians in ‘99…stuff legends are made of. His work, minus the one inning, in both last year and this year’s playoffs, incredible. This year even more so giving it his all after he had clearly become the #2. But as his arm strength and velocity fades, he isn’t changing his style. And that’s why he won’t be pitching effectively 3 or 4 years from now, and that’s why we would have been stupid to guarantee the 4th year.
But in the NL…it’s a whole new ballgame. Make no mistake, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t pwn teams next year, and finish right up in the running for the CY with Randy Johnson. Provided the Unit stays in the NL. If he doesn’t, Pedro’s a lock…I’m calling it now.
Pedro, you will be missed. And not in the way Rocket is “missed”, where until we thought he was retiring, we hated him. You will have a place in our hearts. And, even if you don’t believe it, you are, were, and will be respected by the Nation. But don’t try to tell us that this was about anything other than money and league change, because feeding us that BS means you don’t respect us.
The King of Queens:
So, Pedro, all you wanted was "respect"? It wasn't about the money? Ha! Making you the highest paid pitcher in team history (er, in baseball history, during his previous contract), guaranteeing you more than the staff ace, guaranteeing you three years in a Boston uniform with a good shot at a fourth via incentives, as well as guaranteeing you a perennial shot at the Series despite what appears to be a sliding career, wasn't enough "respect"? It's so tiring, keeping up with the egos of these players. If this deal is true, we can thank Pedro for a great run, for being an artist beyond compare, for being the most watchable pitcher in Sox' history, but unfortunately we can also look him in the eye and tell him that he lied, without feeling too bad about making that accusation. Theo et. al. did everything they could, if this move is the case, but apparently Omar Minaya and the Mets ownership were better equipped to deliver a $50M ass-smacking kiss of respect.
