Well, according to various reports, the Sox have either signed or are on the verge of signing David Wells to a one or two year deal at the winter meetings.
Boomer.
I for one welcome our new lefty hard-drinking hard-living overlord.
Wells gives us a solid lefty in the rotation, something we haven’t had in a while. As a matter of fact, just sitting here, I can’t remember our last good lefty starter. He’s up there in age, at 42, and this will likely be his last contract, but a swan song at Fenway would be a treat for sure.
Wells isn’t that great lifetime at Fenway, something like 10–10 with a +4 ERA. But then again, that’s always against the Sox, and even before they managed to field a World Series team, the Sox have always fielded a team that can hit and win at home. Meanwhile, he’s 16–8 with a sub 3 ERA lifetime against the Yankees, and everyone knows that’s the most important stat to the Nation.
He had a solid year last year, came into camp 30 pounds light, made all his starts, and provided veteran leadership on a pretty good rotation in San Diego. I think he has a good year left in him, and I’d be glad to see it in the Fens.
