Holy crap, I almost had a heart attack yesterday.
I have been struggling to make a test install of our lab system on my development servers. It involves a SQL database. I had Enterprise Manager open to import data from the production database on another server to the new test database on my server.
The product install is shoddy and not going well. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times. I have dug through and hacked up the registry. I am tired. I am pissed. I have been trying to install this software for days.
So it's time to reinstall again. Step one, uninstall software. Done. Step two, remove registry keys (yeah, the uninstall doesn't do that for you). Done and done. Step three, drop the database. Done.
HOLY SHIT WHAT DID I DO?!?!?!
Not realizing that I had the production server expanded in Enterprise Manager, I hit delete on the production db. I said "yes" and "okay" and then sat there waiting. About half a second later I read the IP address and realized what I'd done. I was speechless. My stomach churned. My mind raced. Adrenaline pumped. What the fuck kind of moron am I? I began to pray!
15 seconds seemed an eternity.
Then, my saving grace, an error message, like mana from heaven: "Database cannot be deleted because it is currently in use".
Sigh of relief. Nervous laughter. Hands shaking, I hit windows+L, got up, went outside, smoked 3 cigarettes, and thought in a very stoic way about how close I just came to screwing the company and probably losing my job.
Wow.
