You know, I find that there is a huge disparity between (in genreal) the techincal/development staff and other people in companies.
How many of you are working this weekend? How many of you get home, eat some food, then bust out the laptop to write more code? It's funny. It seems like wherever I work, the dev staff is largely the only group in the company that has no concept of the 40 hour workweek.
I love the people that work 9-5, and then snipe at you behind your back if you come in an hour late on Wednesday. I just want to say "Hey bitch...were you up till 4 this morning working? No? Didn't think so. Shut your fucking mouth."
That kind of stuff really pisses me off. I guess it's just because I'm doing a crapload of work this weekend (not unlike many of you I'm sure) and all these other people are just enjoying their weekend. But really...if you don't subscribe to my philosophy of working, if you don't want to spend your free time working, that's fine. Work isn't life. I don't begrudge you your freetime. I knew the kind of life I was getting into when I became a software developer. But don't dare question my work ethic While you're sleeping, or watching the baseball game, I'm writing the tools that allow you to complete your job in 8 hours a day.
Sorry, I'm just bitchy for some reason. A scenario like this really pissed me off earlier in the week, and it was actually directed at my boss who works every bit of the hours I do if not more, and it only occurred to me just now while I was taking a code break. The nice thing is that at my company upper management understands the IT Ethos when it comes to effort put in and hours worked, and they never have a problem with coming late or leaving early once in a while, or seemingly excessive smoke breaks, or what have you. They understand that we do things differently, and that we get our shit done. But there's a disconnect between their attitude and the attitudes of the people in their departments.
